An investigative stage essay about physical disability, the body, and theater.
Slo-mo examines how slowly and laboriously society is moving toward greater inclusion of people with disabilities. It uses elements of movement, dance, and drama, as well as the format of a performance lecture, in which personal experiences, interviews with representatives of cultural institutions, and documentary materials are intertwined with movement and dance sequences.
On stage, disadvantaged performers meet with representatives of (fictional and real) institutions to confront the frustrations, barriers, and invisibility that disadvantaged people face in culture. The project asks: Why do social movements take so long and are so slow?
Slo-mo follows on from the production Utopia is now! and further develops the author's work at the intersection of documentary theater, dance, and artistic-civic research.
